THE ART OF MATTING AND FRAMING

(Why ever would you want to frame that picture!)

Sara Munro, owner of Studio 33 Art and Frame Gallery 140 Bank Street, New London, CT, will be giving a presentation on the different aspects of custom archival matting and picture framing for photographs at the August 30th meeting of the Connecticut Valley Camera Club. This presentation will include framing photographs with or without matting, framing for display purposes as well as the do’s and don’ts of the different types of mats and frames. She will also explore the use of ready-made mats and frames vs. custom framing and the different types of glazing applications. There will be many examples of matting and framing to demonstrate success and failures taking into consideration sizes, colors, frame size and styles. She will also discuss the processes used in mounting photos.

Sara Munro: owner, Studio 33.
Shortly after moving to the New London area in 1982, from the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, Sara filled in at a frame shop owned by a friend of her husband. She liked it so much that after just a few days of work, she stayed on. Working in custom framing at Studio 33 for many years, she finally purchased the business in 2006. In November of 2008, Sara moved the shop from State Street, New London to it’s present location at 140 Bank Street, New London - a more "alive" location. Now nestled in the Historic District of New London, in an 1841 building, the art and frame gallery fits right in. With it’s cozy, living room atmosphere, local artists come not just for custom framing, but to have shows and sell works of art including three dimensional original works. Shows change about every 6-8 weeks and feature established and emerging artists
including one of Charles Chu's last shows. (Charles was a very colorful and popular figure among New London folks) In May, 2010, Studio 33 hosted the Connecticut Valley Camera Club for the first time and featured some 42 photographs.
